Howto Upgrade LineageOS From 20.0 to 21

This time LinageOS has no .0, only 21 - https://lineageos.org/Changelog-28/, in the end everything went pretty smooth.

As Android has moved onto the quarterly maintenance release model, this release will be “LineageOS 21”, not 21.0 or 21.1 - though worry not - we are based on the latest and greatest Android 14 version, QPR1.

Honestly I never understood the versioning and never cared that much.

See previous parts if you have an older version:

Preparation

I still had working adb and fastboot from the last time.

Upgrade Lineage

I followed the offical upgrade guide https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/xz2c/upgrade/.

Here this reboot sideload didn’t work for me as I got rebooted to the recovery, but couldn’t sideload anything:

$ adb -d sideload ~/lineage-21.0-20240524-nightly-xz2c-signed.zip
adb: sideload connection failed: no devices found
adb: trying pre-KitKat sideload method...
adb: pre-KitKat sideload connection failed: no devices found

but I saw the device:

$ adb devices
List of devices attached
BH902KDKCU      recovery

I had to go to Advanced -> Reboot to recovery. And then after the restart Apply update -> Apply from ADB.

$ adb sideload ~/lineage-21.0-20240524-nightly-xz2c-signed.zip
Total xfer: 1.00x

And then I also flashed boot, because why not:

$ fastboot flash boot ~/boot.img
Sending 'boot_b' (65536 KB)                        OKAY [  0.259s]
Writing 'boot_b'                                   OKAY [  1.276s]
Finished. Total time: 1.554s
$ fastboot reboot
Rebooting                                          OKAY [  0.000s]
Finished. Total time: 0.100s

And that’s all. Don’t forget to flash Gapps in the correct timing if you use some.
