Chatcontrol 1.0 Passed

Couple of days ago I learned that Chatcontrol 1.0 passed.

Today, the European Parliament allowed the suspicionless mass scanning of private communications (“Chat Control 1.0”) to pass, a measure it had rejected twice in March. Although a majority of voting Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) actually opposed the regulation (314 against, 276 in favor, 17 abstentions), the motion to reject it failed to secure the required absolute majority of 361 votes. How the fuck can something pass automatically and requires more that majority to be rejected? Obviously I haven't read all 100,000 or whatever pages European Union governance has, but this definitely seems suspicious, undemocratic and fuck this. I watch lots of geopolitics and I hear very often von Leyen talking about freedom and democracy. It seems the freedom and democracy is not meant for everybody after all.

So far E2E encrypted communication is exempted, but that is a hard problem anyways. But it doesn't matter, vast majority of communication is not encrypted, only the client->server part, but the payload itself (message) is not.

Soon there will be discussions about Chatcontrol 2.0 which will be probably mandatory and include E2E communication and what will be next? Mandatory Neuralink in a head, so the system is sure I don't harbor any wrong ideas and anal probe, so they are sure they can anytime fu...never mind.

I think some protections for children are needed, but it should be not at the dire cost for all society. Fuck that. So what, monitor the children. Because once the dragnet is in place, it will be very easy to add "further requirements" to it. Like what the fuck are we doing? Have we not learned anything? In one episode of Ghost in the Shelll SAC they ask American Empire to activate a dragnet to find communications related to a topic. But here they are always the good guys fighting terrorism. We are presented that this solution is the only way, but I disagree.

Also I believe that humans need a sense of privacy and since the internet is nowadays 99% client-server and goes through nodes, the encryption is the way to prevent third parties to watch.

Have you seen how the internet in China works? They cannot access the outside world without VPN and everything is monitored and the content is removed if the system ("the almighty party" in this case) thinks it makes them look bad. Forget about complaining about serious stuff on the internet like natural disasters or problems with the infrastructure. And USA and their Flock cameras? These fucks are currently deploying cameras everywhere, with solar panels and 4G/Starlink, these cameras can be in the middle of nowhere and still work and Flock as a company is obviously selling data to many 3rd parties without a warrant.

And EU? We have this retarded society which tries not to offend anybody via hate speech laws, except maybe Russians because they attacked Ukraine. But behind the mask, the reality is much bleaker, the goal is the control.

There are cases where people are stuck in law cases for years for vague reasons. Merz, German chancellor said that he would like to know who these anonymous commenters are - related to criticism of the government online. Britain is sending police to people for tweets. There is a thin line between fair criticism and real hate speech and currently it is fucked up, because one cannot criticize certain topics freely. A free discussion and a rational thinking? Nope. We are pushed to follow the ideology without any analysis if it makes sense.

We are always laughing on North Korea and China, yet that is exactly where we will be in a couple of years. There will be nuances, sure, since China has like 4 communication platforms and Europe many.

Laws are retarded and can change for the worse and with mass scanning, using AI to find patterns - it is and will be much easier to get compro material and to control the population through various means. There is already enough computing power to process it all.

And I am not even writing about AI and how it can very secretly manipulate the population if it becomes the single source of truth. TikTok or to lesser extent other social media is nothing to the power of trusted humanlike entity.

So what now? Freemails are basically fucked, I expect they will fold easily. With Russians there is always similar pattern - Russians organize via Telegram? Good. Ukraine organizes attacks? Bad. Terrorism. Russia using Starlink in their drones and misiles? These fucks even boasted about that. Musk disables Starlink in Russia? Starlink bad, Ukraine should not use it.

Anyways, about Whatsapp - I wouldn't trust it that much and there is also Jabber+OMEMO, but honestly, there are usability issues. S/MIME would be also a way, but it is just sensitive to attacks from the future and also if a private key leaks, it is possible to read all previous enctypted messages. Not good.

We used to joke about KGB, Czechoslovak state security and Stasi - informants and agents, but well, here we are, jokes are becoming a reality, but instead of a neighbour in a apartment building we have a network of sensors being a part of very large surveillance networks.

It is hard to say where is will go futher. It seems that in some ways they are using slow salami method or boiling a frog, but in other ways things are changing much faster, like every week or every month.

I still remember how I tried to compile eap_tls module from the sources in Freeradius, because it was under USA export control. Any encryption different than DES or 3DES was considered a weapon or something like that. Frankly I could not do it, since I was relatively new to the Linux world and in the end I just let it go and when I learned that the embargo was lifted, then restarted my journey with Freeradius.
